The decision of the online shop platform can make an enormous difference in the manner a vendor operates its online business. Hence, switching from one platform to another is an inevitable stage for any business with the expansion of the business.
There is a common platform migration scenario with Magento merchants. Magento is quite a popular platform but complicated platform because it requires technical expertise to handle properly for store management.
For those, who are completely non-technical and don’t feel comfortable working with the Magento platform, Shopify is the best alternative. Shopify is user-friendly and has the
same functionalities as Magento. Shopify for eCommerce has become a common choice for Magento merchants because of its convenient store management and affordability.
Why Magento to Shopify Migration?
Shopify is one of the most broadly used platforms for eCommerce besides Magento. Shopify has a simple to use dashboard for merchants alongside a quite number of themes and applications to support different functionalities as well.
Moreover, it’s a secure and flexible eCommerce platform like Magento and supports the custom Shopify app development as well. Below is the Magento to Shopify migration checklist of pros:
- Shopify comes with an easy-to-use back-end for store management and merchants can manage it easily without any technical knowledge.
- Shopify has several applications developed to extend functionality and improve UX at a very nominal cost.
- Merchants can also use custom app solutions to extend Shopify store functionality by hiring Shopify experts.
Magento 2 to Shopify Migration
Although, there are few ways to migrate from Magento to the Shopify platform. Either it can be done with software, custom scripts, or plugin. But it depends upon the store size and
budget as well.
Our team of Magento 2 developers and Shopify web developer at Ascure Tech to provide Magento 2 to Shopify migration services. Recently we had a chance to migrate an eCommerce store from Magento 2 to Shopify for one of our clients from California, USA. We used the custom scripts to migrate data from Magento 2 to Shopify smoothly
Our Teams Approach Migration
Our client had a Magento site that was running effectively on Magento, so we wanted to make sure that no data was lost during the migration from Magento to Shopify efficiently.
Additionally, Magento had separate collections and sub-collections which aren’t accessible in Shopify. While migration we needed to ensure that the collections in Magento are duplicated impeccably in Shopify. This was unrealistic through any available module or plugin, so we chose to migrate the e-store using custom scripts.
Our experience with Magento to Shopify migration
We had already migrated Magento stores to another eCommerce store like WooCommerce, so we knew the drill since the beginning. Once we are through the Magento store and filtered the data which were supposed to migrate and take backup of that. We followed the below steps for Magento to Shopify data migration:
For Data migration
Our team of Magento 2 developers began the process of migration with Magento 2 to Shopify migration. As we know that data migration is a very critical job and time-consuming process. We followed the below procedure for data migration.
Data Transfer from Magento to Shopify via Local DB
During the process of data migration, our team of Magento 2 certified developers transferred data from the Magento store to a Local database to proceed with data migration, instead of transferring data to Shopify directly from Magento. Our team of expert developers used Magento API to export data from Magento and stored it in the Local database.
When data was stored in the Local database then the team had to access from Shopify account of the client to initiate the process of data transfer. For this, Shopify API used to
access data from the Local database with ease for further processing.
Deploying the Data Sequentially
Once the connection of Local DB and Shopify store was done, our team of Shopify experts created a custom script to deploy the data sequentially. Using the custom scripts, the team was able to access the data easily. Custom script helped in accessing all the collections, categories, and products easily. Scripts also helped in accessing the exact URLs of products, collections, and customers’ information along with their order details as well in the database.
How did we run the custom scripts for Data Transfer?
Once we were done with the process of creating custom scripts and establishment connections of Shopify and Local Database then we had to run the script for the deployment of data. However, it was taking a lot of time to process so we had to use a software tool that would keep this process running in the background.
To do this job, we used Cron which is a time-based scheduler. Cron is capable of running the script and importing the data. Cron Jobs was helpful to execute the custom scripts in the background fluently.
How Frontend was handled?
Frontend didn’t bother too much as backend. The frontend section was easier to manage in comparison to the backend; the team just had to do only minor customization. Client bought the theme according to the business requirement and to fulfill all the purposes. Our Shopify web designer made the minor customization to make it more interactive.
Conclusion
Switching to Shopify from Magento can surely be a turning for any eCommerce business but that does not make Magento any less performing platform. Shopify just gives merchants a free hand to work more on the business instead of putting efforts into managing the dashboard and spending money on maintenance.
However, to switch from Shopify to Magento, you need to hire a Shopify developer and Magento 2 developer. To make this task possible and perform, the team should work with caution and care.
